EDIT: Check out *akreon's journal entry about this issue too: [link] -------- "Renders" = Stolen art. "Renders" with quotation marks because real renders are cool things that 3D artists do.
This is the first stamp I have ever made. Because if you talk to these render-makers, they simply ignore or block you and the admins don't really seem to do anything about it either, so I figured the easiest way to spread the word about this issue would be making a stamp.
Lately, I see one of these on the front page every fucking time I log in to and it annoys me because it's nothing but shameless art theft. Either a background-less picture of some popular character or a wallpaper made by using these transparent png images (and the maker claiming they were free stock images). DO NOT ADD THEM TO YOUR FAVOURITES. REPORT THEM!! Rendering is originally what 3D artists do to 3D models. But here is what these people think "rendering" is: Random person takes a fanart or official anime/manga/videogame art from the official website, image board (like Zerochan), Pixiv, Google image search, etc., then removes the background of the pic with Photoshop's magic eraser tool, and then posts it on deviantART as a free to use stock image. They often post them to the "Resources & Stock Images / Stock Images / 3D & Renders / Miscellaneous" category. This is NOT rendering. You know, maybe the original picture had a background because the artist didn't inted it to be used as free clipart...
This stamp probably won't get popular, but even if just a few of my watchers notice it and agree with it, it will be a success for me.
The image I used is Oz from Pandora Hearts drawn by Jun Mochizuki. I've seen this exact same image on as a "render" before.
I don't mind renders if it's like, "oh, I took the stock image's white background out so people that do photomanip can use it!" or "I asked the original artist of this if I could snip out the character and keep it on DA for use on a sig or something and credited them so sigmakers can also credit them" but I believe that they should go into scraps and not into their main gallery, since it's not actually a work of their own art.
I don't know how far you've gotten into English (assuming you've ever even taken an English class) but it is a morphing language. Definitions of words change and get added onto all the time. Just because YOU don't like it doesn't mean it isn't going to happen. Now "rendering" means turning something 3D into 2D, causing something (as in, rendering one unconscious), doing something (as in, rendering a service), to provide something (like y'know aid), etc. and cutting shit out. No word in the English language has one specific meaning, and you are an ignorant fool if you believe that any of them do.
Also, I am a maker of signatures and I can say for a fact that it's not the case that "they've already done most of the work". Instead of doing what you guys think all of us do, I take the original image, usually a stock image from whatever I'd like to use so I don't hurt anyone's feelings, otherwise I ask for permission, I cut it out, then I give it a background.. some effects, foreground, border and text. You can sit there and bitch and call me a thief and tell me that it's not artistic all you like. But it takes an eye for color and design that people take for granted. My opinion will never change.
The main problem that I have with it is that people need to ASK and CREDIT the original artist. But they don't. It's annoying, and it's complete bullshit.
Also, while it's not really art, you do have to put some effort into doing it correctly or it looks like shit. It's not just like, "MAGIC WAAAAAND!" BAM. DONE. NOW IS PERFEYCT.
Oh yeah, I'm just a n00b artist, how dare I argue with you professional render and signature makers?? *shot*
I think we actually agree about a couple of things. I'm not saying nobody is allowed to make a signature or anything they want using other people's art. HECK, I DO THAT TOO SOMETIMES. My problem is sharing without permission and credit. I never thought of posting the signatures/icons/wallpapers I made for myself on deviantART. Because why should I? That isn't the purpose of deviantART and it's against the rules anyway.
And I'm pretty sure I know more about the English language than some American retards. But calling them a "render" doesn't make it okay to submit them on deviantART and I am entitled to have my own opinion. They are not renders to me and I'm pretty sure the DA staff wasn't thinking about anime cutouts when they made a "Render" category on DA either.
I didn't call you a noob artist, I'm no professional, and I never said that anyone wasn't allowed to argue with me. We're all entitled to an opinion, and they're all going to be different.
I said that they're not art and that they should go into scraps if they come on at all. The Render category is specifically for the original meaning of the term, and I understand that.
I've already stated that we're both entitled to an opinion, and I'm glad I got to share mine with you and I was glad to see yours. I'd like to apologize if I've offended you in any way.
Haha, sorry for being sarcastic, I just got this impression from your previous comment. But yeah, different opinions are great. The world would be a boring place if everyone had the same opinion.
You can call them art, actually. Everything can be called art. But I come here on DA to see original works because DA should be about that. And I have a thing against these renders because it seems to be a fad to make them nowadays and most artists are not happy about their art being used and offered as free stock like that...
You didn't offend me. Thank you for sharing your opinion with me.
It gets annoying to report them too. I already reported over 30 of these things! *falls on bed* Especially the ones with a tiny print icon next to the title.
I know, right? And when I try to explain them calmly and properly why it is wrong and link them the copyright policy and FAQ, they mark my comment as spam and block me... -___- I don't know why I'm even trying...
